Toyota is announcing that the RAV4 Prime and Prius Prime would be renamed RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid and Prius Plug-in Hybrid, respectively.

Toyota claims a change from Prime to Plug-in Hybrid is aimed to make it easier for customers to grasp the different powertrain options provided on the RAV4 and the Prius.

The Prius Plug-In Hybrid and RAV4 Plug-In Hybrid remain unchanged until 2025. The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid remains available in two trim levels, SE and XSE, and produces 302 horsepower from a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine combined with two electric motors.

The RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid achieves 42 kilometers of all-electric range with its 18.5-kWh battery.

Prices for the 2025 RAV4 Plug-in Hybrid start at $45,260 for the SE trim and $49,130 for the XSE, and Toyota claims the PHEV model will be available in "limited quantities" at the end of 2024.

The Prius Plug-in Hybrid, meanwhile, is available in SE, XSE, and XSE Premium trim levels and retains the same 13.6-kWh battery that provides up to 44 kilometers of electrical driving range on the base SE trim level.

The Prius PHEV is powered by a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine and two electric motors, producing a total of 220 horsepower.

Toyota has not yet announced a pricing or release date for the 2025 Prius Plug-in Hybrid.
