Mercedes issued the recall of 27,000 of its most costly vehicles owing to a potential issue with their V8 engines.

The impacted cars include 26,260 units of the Mercedes-branded S580 sedan formed for the 2021-2023 model years.

and 930 of the more luxurious Mercedes-Maybach S580 of the same era. Both vehicles are powered by the same 4.0-liter V8 engine that produces 496 horsepower (503 PS).

These engines with V8s are equipped with 48-volt mild-hybrid technology to improve productivity, as well as Mercedes' Camtronic cylinder deactivation technology, which can turn off combustion at four cylinders while cruising.

Drivers will not receive any advance warning, according to the carmaker, but they may notice a check engine light emerge when the malfunction occurs and before the engine stalls.

Beginning in the summer of 2023, more than half of owners reported engines that would not run or start, prompting Mercedes to conduct an investigation.

The automaker's answer is to update the software in the engine control system, which regrettably cannot be done via over-the-air update.
